Invisible Join — a clean, seamless way to finish a round without leaving a bump, jog, or visible slip stitch.
What It Is
The invisible join is a finishing technique that closes a round so smoothly it looks like the stitches continue without interruption. It replaces the usual slip stitch join with a cleaner, more professional finish.
Why It Matters
This join removes the “step” or bump that slip stitches create, especially in projects worked in the round. It’s ideal for pieces where the edge will be visible and you want the final stitch to blend in naturally.
When to Use It
- Finishing a round in amigurumi or closed motifs
- Ending a color section cleanly
- Any time you want a seamless edge without a visible join
How to Do It
Step-by-Step (with photos)
Insert your needle under both top loops of the first stitch of the round (from front to back). Pull the yarn through gently.
Insert the needle down through the center of the last stitch you made (through the “V”), then bring it out the back loop of the stitch.
Pull snug to close — this creates a false stitch that looks like a normal stitch.

Tips
- Use a blunt yarn needle — it helps you slide under loops without splitting the yarn.
- Look for the first true stitch of the round, not the turning chain — this keeps the join level.
- Match your tension when pulling snug so the “false stitch” blends in with the others.
- Keep the yarn tail relaxed while inserting, then tighten gradually for better control.
