Most yarn sold for crochet comes in skeins, cakes, or balls. Before you begin crocheting, you need to find the yarn end and decide how you want to pull the yarn while working.
There are two common ways to start a skein: center pull and outside pull. Both methods work, and many crocheters develop a preference over time.
Center Pull vs Outside Pull
Many yarn skeins allow you to pull yarn either from the center of the skein or from the outside.
Center Pull
With a center pull, the working yarn comes from the middle of the skein rather than the outside.
- Benefit: The skein usually stays in place instead of rolling around.
- Common issue: The first pull may bring out a loose bundle of yarn often called “yarn barf.”
Outside Pull
With an outside pull, the working yarn comes from the outer end of the skein.
- Benefit: The yarn end is usually easy to find.
- Common issue: The skein may roll around while you crochet.
If your skein keeps rolling while crocheting, try placing it in a bowl, yarn bag, or project basket to keep it in place.
